As I woke this morning to faint light leaking through my blinds, I heard my alarm playing and song that took me back to where I was 7 years ago today. As I think about today and everything that it represents my heart is full of mixed emotions. I know that I will never forget where I was, what I was doing, who I was around and what I was feeling.
Seven years ago today, I was attending my first few weeks of classes of my freshman year at Snow College. I had enjoyed my early morning walk to my math class through the large mature shady trees and remember the fresh cool autumn air.
My class was in a cold dark basement room filled to the brim of tired math students. As the professor came in to start the lecture, a friend of mine raised her and announced that an airplane had crashed into the World Trade Center. She had not caught any details or the nature of the situation. Our first thought was that it must have been a private plane, and did not realize the severity.
After class I made my way home and my roommates had the news on and it was at that point I realized the devastation of the crash. We sat together and watched the footage and witnessed the second plane crashing into the second building as well as hearing about the other two planes. The shock and horror rang through when we realized we were under attack. As we shared tears and fears of what had happened and what would come, we comforted each other with our faith in God.
That night fear and heartache broke out across our country as well as our little college town. My family was far away and I remember calling home in shear panic. As I listened to the comforting words from my parents it soothed my heart and I knelt and prayed for the families who were directly hurt from the attack.
We came together as a country, town, ward, family and roommates and mourned for those who were suffering. Still all these years later, as I blog this entry my eyes are full of tears in remembrance of that day. However, my faith in God and our country provides me with assurance that we are okay.
At this time when the world is so confusing and everyone has different views and ideas of how things should be, I hope that we can remember how important it is to stand together in faith in God and our country. I believe that ultimately it is us as individuals who decide how it's going to be by who we decide to be. Our country will break apart if we do not stand together always, no matter what our differences may be. We need to be smart in our choices because it will be us who will reap the consequences.
I love my country and it is my faith in God and in Jesus Christ that strengthens me through the rough times in my life. I will never forget that day in September, 7 years ago, or the people who lost their lives. It is burnt into my memory forever.
